Matthew Hicks

Matthew Hicks is a photographer located in Calgary, Alberta. He has found passion for a variety of subjects, most notably landscapes, railways, and outdoor portraiture. In 2003, he first borrowed his mother's camera to take photos of trains, inspired by Nick Morant, special photographer of Canadian Pacific. In 2006, he got his own camera and started branching out into other subjects, especially inspired by the work of Ansel Adams. By 2007, he was selling prints and developing a unique set of styles. In 2011, he received a Certificate of Photography from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, taking a variety of courses including darkroom technique, an art that he plans to continue to practice in his own darkroom.
Matt has been published in several magazines, books, and calendars, most notably Kalmbach's "Trains" Magazine, the leading North American Railway publication, and the 2010, 2011, and 2012 Canadian Pacific Railway corporate calendars.
Matt has a love of nature and travelling to secluded destinations, leading to many impressive landscape photos. He has never been afraid of going the extra mile (or ten) if he thinks there's a special shot. He doesn't shy away from harsh conditions, sometimes spending many hours waiting for 'the shot' waiting in a snowbank at -40 temperatures. In addition, he has a varied background in customer service, theatre, and music, so many find him fun to work with, lending both professionalism and fun to every shoot.
The team doesn't just include Matt, however. His fiancé Adrienne (To whom all these photos are credited) helps as both an assistant and artistic anchor. She is attending the Alberta College of Art and Design, pursuing a Bachelor of Design. She frequently provides insight and another view into the artistic nature of Matt's photos.
In the future, Matt plans to further develop his style and technique while exploring many more places and finding unique experiences for clients, while expanding into new areas of experience. http://www.lightflows.com/blog//galleries/landscape.php
